Manukau is one of four cities making up Greater Auckland, lying to the south between the Manukau Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf. There are three other cities - Auckland City in the centre along the southern fringes of the Waitemata Harbour, North Shore City across the Harbour Bridge, and Waitakere City to the west. These can be easily reached from Hillpark Homestay by motorway. All have their unique features and attractions.

As a destination, Manukau has an amazing array of cultural sites, scenic attractions, beautiful beaches, country trails, bush walks, retail outlets, craft markets, and entertainment attractions. Two major amenities are the Auckland International Airport and the Manukau Superclinic and Surgery Centre.

Below is a selection of the attractions in the area, with their distance from Hillpark Homestay.

The Auckland Regional Botanic Gardens (1.2 km) are a haven for garden lovers and walkers alike, with over 10,000 different plant types, 65 hectares of plant collections and a network of paths that wander through the plant collections, native forest and grassy slopes.

The TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre (1.9 km) is a multi-purpose events centre - promoting art, culture, business and leisure activities. It opened in April 2005. Standing in the plaza of the Events Centre, is Pou Kapua, more than seventy feet high and the tallest Maori carving of its type in the world.

The Tipapa Special Events Centre in Brookby (7.6 km) hosts many functions and equestrian events.

The Puhinui Three Day Event and Country Fair at the Puhunui Reserve (10km) in December each year is a premier equestrian competition for national and international riders.

Nathan Homestead (900m) is Manurewa’s heritage house. The Homestead was built in 1925 and is situated on just over 3 and a half hectares of exquisite lawn and gardens. It has been kept in its original state, and is a unique setting for all types of functions. It is open for viewing. There are always art exhibitions, and pottery and weaving displays.

The Manukau Supercentre (1.2km) provides rooms for a range of specialist consultations. The Manukau Surgery Centre next door (1.2km) is a 40-bed elective surgery facility.

Rainbow’s End Theme Park (2.1 km) is an amusement park, providing a stable of world-class rides and other fun activities. Good for family visits.

Butterfly Creek (11 km), one minute from Auckland International Airport, is Auckland’s newest family-friendly events and entertainment venue. The heart of the complex is a tropical Butterfly House. New addition - crocodiles.

The Howick Historical Village (13.5km), an award-winning tourist attraction, is a Living Museum. It presents the early history of Auckland and especially the fencible settlements in 1850. All 30 buildings are of the 1840-1880 period. Costumed, trained historical interpreters are on duty.

Nine Golf Clubs (the closest -3.75km) are available in Manukau. There are more in greater Auckland.

Westfield Shoppingtown Manukau (2.2 km) with 200 stores, along with restaurants and the eVent cinema complex, and the Botany Town Centre (9.5 km), Manukau’s newest and largest retail development with 150 stores will provide plenty of retail therapy.

The Hunua Falls (25km) is the star attraction of the Hunua Ranges Regional Park. There are nine Regional Parks in South Auckland - all offering walking trails and bush experience.
